Offsetting your emissions on tour - the Tucan Travel Carbon Offset Scheme

As you may know, air travel releases gases that contribute to climate change, such as carbon dioxide (CO2). In fact, your flight will probably have the largest environmental impact of any travel activities during your adventure holiday. As part of our commitment to responsible travel practices, Tucan Travel is offering you the chance to offset your share of the carbon emissions of your flights, which will help to repair the damage your holiday does to the climate.
After months of careful research, we have selected World Land Trust, an international conservation charity, as our carbon offsetting partner. World Land Trust will fund projects on your behalf through their Carbon Balanced programme, which reduces the amount of damage flight emissions are doing to the environment. There are many organisations offering carbon offsetting services, however we believe that as a not-for-profit organisation, World Land Trust has the most scientifically sound approach and socially responsible philosophy.
Tucan Travel will not profit in any way from your carbon offsetting payments. Your contributions will be made directly World Land Trust and Tucan Travel will not receive any direct financial benefit or commission from this.

About the Carbon Balanced programme
World Land Trust manages the Carbon Balanced programme, which works to mitigate climate change through projects that both offset CO2 emissions and conserve biodiversity. These offsets are delivered through restoration ecology projects which restore degraded forest and prevent deforestation, and which work hand-in-hand with land purchase and protection, extending protected areas where land has been previously cleared.
All World Land Trust offset projects must fit definite project design standards that ensure the offsets are real and attributable to a specific location where they are measurable, verifiable, protected and properly monitored. They must also demonstrate benefits for biodiversity conservation and the provision of environmental services, locally and globally. The projects are all managed in collaboration with local, in-country conservation organisations that own and manage the land, with the participation of local communities who are often involved in creating nurseries from native seeds, tree planting, wardening and monitoring. World Land Trust offers a ‘value-added’ offset with the full package delivered in the standard £15/tonne offset price. This approach results in a high degree of confidence in the offset projects, assured perpetual protection of the land, local economic benefit and increased biodiversity.
To make sure Carbon Balanced calculations are based on the best available science, World Land Trust uses the most recent DEFRA-approved conversion factors and a Radiative Forcing Index multiplier of 1.9 to take into account the emissions additionalities from high altitude flights.

Offsetting Your Emissions On Tour - Carbon Offset Scheme
From the 1st of November 2008, you will be able to offset a portion of your share of the carbon emissions created on your tour by paying an optional contribution when you make your final payment. 100% of any contributions made will be passed on to World Land Trust, who will put the contributions towards their Carbon Balanced programme. You will also have the ability to opt-out of this scheme if you choose. You can find full details of the scheme on page 8 of the 2009-10 brochure.
If you book your tour in the months of November and December 2008, Tucan Travel will match your contribution ‘dollar for dollar’. On top of that, from 01 January 2009, Tucan Travel will calculate what travellers have donated, and donate an additional 10% of the total to World Land Trust. So the more you contribute, the more we can give! We will also absorb all processing fees associated with these payments, so there’s no administration cost to World Land Trust and they can spend the donations where it counts - protecting threatened habitats
