The Arctic Adventure Tours
Located halfway between Norway and the North Pole, the Svalbard archipelago is a beautiful untouched wilderness. Rich in wildlife and spectacular scenery, the islands are known for their jagged mountains, sweeping tundra, massive ice caps and deep fjords. Our Spitsbergen adventure cruises start on the largest of the islands which features the largest settlement, Longyearbyen, on its western coast, with just over 2,000 inhabitants. Only 6 to 7% of the land-area of the Norwegian archipelago is covered by vegetation and most of Svalbard is covered by permafrost which partially thaws during the summer.

The most fertile areas are in the inner fjord-regions of Spitsbergen while in the area around Longyearbyen more than 100 different species of plants have been found. Some of the largest concentrations of birdlife can be found on a Spitsbergen adventure cruise, with hundreds of thousands flocking to the North Atlantic on a migratory path every year. Svalbard reindeer and the Arctic fox are found on most of the islands and an estimated population of around 3,000 polar bears live on the archipelago, along with various species of seals and walrus.
