Joining information for Adventure Tours starting in Havana, Cuba Joining Hotel Details HOTEL LINCOLN Arrival in Havana If you would prefer to make your own way to and from your hotel, taxis wait in a long line just outside the ground floor exit. Unfortunately, all the different taxi companies line up and are assigned to clients in order. Therefore it's luck of the draw if you get one of the more expensive cab companies, like Taxi OK, or one of the cheaper ones, like Panataxi or Havanautos. You can try demanding a Panataxi or Havanautos taxi or you could try negotiating a flat rate. But this may not work. A taxi to downtown Havana should cost between US$10 and US$15, although it's not uncommon for the meter or arranged fee to reach US$20. José Martí International Airport is 25km southwest of Havana. You should find an ATM among all the booths and kiosks on the ground floor, and another on the second floor, where departing passengers check in. Please note American Express and any other credit cards drawn on American banks will NOT be accepted in Cuba.
IMPORTANT CURRENCY CHANGES
Until recently US dollars were accepted for all purchases in Cuba. However President Fidel Castro has banned the currency in response to the tightening of sanctions by the US. From November 14 2004, all shops, restaurants and bars will accept only the Cuban peso. Therefore it is now advisable to take currency and travellers cheques in £ sterling or Euros which you can then change easily. It is still possible to exchange US dollars however transactions are subject to a hefty 10% commission. As the situation is likely to be unstable at first we recommend that you take a variety of currencies (including a small amount of US dollars). Your local payment must now be paid in Euros.
IMPORTANT CHANGES TO YOUR LOCAL PAYMENT
The local payment for your tour must now be paid in Euros (US dollars WILL NOT be accepted). Please see your tour dossier for the exact amount payable.
Airport transfers in joining and departing cities are not included but can be booked through Tucan Travel at an additional cost. Transfer prices are listed on our website.
Day 1 of all our tours is simply an arrival day, with no organised activities, so you will have some free time to relax or see some of the local sights. You should find some local information (e.g. a few good places to eat and drink, do laundry, etc.) on the hotel notice board. Your tour leader will be staying in the hotel and should have put up a welcome note to let you know what room s/he is in. A pre-departure meeting is usually held in the afternoon or early evening of day 1. You will need to bring the following important items to your meeting with the tour leader:
Please note: If you have booked an arrival transfer with us and you are going to be delayed more than two hours, you must advise us of the delay at least 6 hours before arrival. If we are advised in time, we will make every effort to reschedule your transfer and your driver will be asked to wait for two hours after your new expected arrival time. However if we are not made aware of any change, the driver will only wait for two hours after the original scheduled arrival time and after this point it will be up to you to arrange transport to your hotel at your own expense. Please contact us on the emergency contact address below if you are likely to be delayed.
