If you book pre tour accommodation, you will be staying in cabins or rooms. From day 1 of your tour you will be staying in tented accommodation. During the tour you may have the option to upgrade to cabins at campsites or upgrade to a different room at hostels, subject to availability. Upgrade prices vary between US$5–15 per person and can only be booked locally with the assistance of your tour leader.

Arrival in Nairobi
When arriving at Nairobi International Airport we recommend that you obtain some Kenyan Shillings as soon as you arrive. There is a Barclays bank and ATM on your left hand side as you exit the arrivals area. The ATM s is of course 24hr and Barclays are open from 6am until 10pm. There is also the Taipan FX bureau just a bit to the right and in front of you who give a better rate if you are changing cash or Travellers cheques; they are open from 8am to 5pm daily. At both Barclays and the Taipan you will need your purchase receipt if you are changing traveller’s cheques.

Please note:
It is very important to ensure that you obtain enough US$ cash to cover your local payment, visas and optional excursions before you travel. It can be very difficult to obtain US$ in Africa, even in major cities like Cape Town. Tour leaders cannot accept any notes that are marked, torn or older than the year 2002, and you may have difficulty exchanging these notes elsewhere in Africa, so please check your cash carefully at the point of purchase.

Airport transfers in joining and departing cities are not included but can be booked through Tucan Travel at an additional cost. Transfer prices are listed on our website.
Please note: If you have booked an arrival transfer with us and you are going to be delayed more than two hours, you must advise us of the delay at least 6 hours before arrival. If we are advised in time, we will make every effort to reschedule your transfer and your driver will be asked to wait for two hours after your new expected arrival time. However if we are not made aware of any change, the driver will only wait for two hours after the original scheduled arrival time and after this point it will be up to you to arrange transport to your hotel at your own expense. Please contact us on the emergency contact address below if you are likely to be delayed.

Rowena Byrne (+44) (0)789 984 3645 (mobile phone) Tucan Travel General Operations Manager London, UK

These numbers are a service for emergency calls only. We respectfully request that you consider the urgency of your enquiry. Non-urgent enquiries should be made during office hours. Visit contact us page for office hours.

If you would prefer to make your own way to and from your hotel, you can book transport though Karen Camp when you book your accommodation, they will provide a transfer for between $25 and $30 (max 4 people) depending on exchange rate. The camp is situated quite a distance from the airport and can be a little difficult to find, so if you do not book a transfer then please download the camps location map from our website. Airport taxis in Nairobi can work out to be expensive.

Joining Your Tour

Day 1 of all our tours is simply an arrival day, with no organised activities, so you will have the day to relax or see some of the local sights. You will find some local information (e.g. a few good places to eat and drink, do laundry, etc.) on the hotel notice board. Your tour leader will  put up a welcome note on the morning of day one to let you know what room s/he is in and their cell number in case of any emergency. A pre-departure meeting will be held in the afternoon or early evening of Day 1; please refer to the welcome note for the exact time. You will need to bring the following important items to your meeting with the tour leader:

  • Your local payment in US dollars cash
  • Your passport, including any necessary visas and at least one photocopy to give to your tour leader
  • Vaccination certificates if relevant to any destinations on your tour
  • Travel insurance policy and a photocopy to give to your tour leader
  • Your travel voucher  and a blue or black pen.

Click here to find out where you can take out US$ for your local payment.

Tents will be available from the truck for camping from day 1. If you wish to pre book a room independently for this night then you will be responsible for the difference between the camping and room price.

Karen Camp serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in their restaurant/ bar (breakfast is not included) or you can take a taxi (or wander) up the road to Karen where there are several restaurants and coffee shops, please ask at the bar for details. You should remember when in the city too always keep your camera concealed when not in use and carry daypacks on your front for extra safety. Crime in Africa is not as bad as its reputation but you must be sensible and alert.

Enjoy your tour with Tucan Travel!
