Hike the Lares Trek and visit Machu Picchu afterwards
Hidden within the magnificent snow-capped Andes, the beautiful Lares Valley has all the natural beauty of the Inca Trail – magical mountain scenery and the legacy of the Incas – but without the busy tourist crowds. In fact, the Lares Trek is so far off the beaten track that it has changed little over the last 500 years. Enjoy a visit to Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas after your trek.

Meet local people and witness an authentic rural Andean way of life
Discovery Tours, Adventure Tours and Overland Expeditions which include time to complete the Lares Trek are indicated by the Inca Trail Trek icon on the tour map. This is because most people choose the Lares Trek as a quieter alternative to the more popular Inca Trail. As permits are not currently required for the Lares Trek we can generally guarantee your place on this excursion.

Trek for three days followed by a day trip to Machu Picchu
An exceptional alternative to the extremely busy Inca Trail, the Lares Trek is so far off the beaten track that it has changed little over the last 500 years. The Lares Trek begins in the Sacred Valley of the Incas and passes through terraced fields and traditional villages as you climb into the Andes.

What to take on the Lares Trek
During the Lares trek even daytime temperatures can become extremely cold with a wind chill factor, especially on day two crossing the high passes so it is important to pack lots of warm layers. Bring your own sleeping bag, a comfortable backpack to carry anything your porters can't, and plenty of sunscreen - see the packing list for details.
