Europe is a treasure trove of cultures, history, landmarks and cuisines. With an incredible 50 countries sharing the continent, it’s no wonder the diversity and variety here is second to none and home to some of the most incredible attractions and finest food in the world. High end couture meets local markets, adrenaline-pumping activities or classy wine bars, Europe is bound to have something to entice you in. With so much to see, here are our top 10 reasons why Western Europe should be at the top of your list.
It’s home to some of the most iconic landmarks in the world
Have you heard of the Eiffel Tower, The Leaning Tower of Pisa or The Colosseum? Chances are you have seen these images plastered all over the internet, books, magazines and brochures. They even make an appearance in a number of films and TV shows. With good reason, Europe has some of the most famous and fascinating buildings you can see. With so much history, these landmarks can date back thousands of years and give a fascinating insight into the past.
You can find some of the best food in the world. Yup, Western Europe is tasty!
With a great variety of cultures comes an even greater variety of food, and Europe doesn’t disappoint. From melt in your mouth Macarons in Paris to warm and hearty Bratwurst in Germany, creamy Italian pasta to chocolatey Belgium waffles, cheese fondue in Switzerland to cheese everything in Amsterdam. Each country in Europe has its own unique flavours, traditions and must try foods. Keep an open mind and indulge, that snail might not be so bad after all! Let’s not forget that Europe is ahead of the game with just about everything – this includes some of the best vegan, vegetarian or gluten free restaurants you can find. So don’t worry, whatever your preferences are you will be blown away with what Europe has to offer.
It’s probably one of the easiest areas to explore
You could be sipping on wine on a Parisian rooftop bar one night and sailing down a Dutch canal the next. A mere few hours later you could find yourself wandering the fairytale cobbled streets of Bruges or dancing the night away in a techno club in Berlin. From cheap regional flights, an abundance of trains or buses that cross borders everyday, travel in Europe is frequent, comfortable and very accessible. Europe is big in personality but small enough to travel between countries in a few short hours.
Every country is rich in its own unique history
The Romans are possibly one of the most influential civilisations to have existed. France and Italy have produced artists and painters who paved the way for art movements that have shaped the world, and Greek Mythology is still widely studied to gain a better understanding of, well, everything! European history dates back to 27th century BC and with a lot of ancient landmarks being well preserved, glimpses of the past can still be seen around every corner. There is a reason Europe has such a multitude of UNESCO World Heritage sites!
The nightlife is great, no matter what you like!
Do you prefer a cosy and casual medieval bar with pints larger than you can get your hand around? Or maybe dancing the night away in a drum and bass club is more your jam? From classy cocktail bars in Milan to local craft beer hangouts in Prague, Europe really does have a little something for every taste. One night you could be partying the night away in London and the next you might find yourself sipping on wine while sailing on a gondola in Venice. From jazz bars to classical, traditional dances to the pop culture songs that everyone knows, however you like to spend your evenings, you’ll be sure to find your place in Europe.
The views are some of the best. Iconic you might say
Maybe you like getting every angle for the gram, capturing the most iconic viewpoints of each city and making your friends sooo jealous. Or perhaps you prefer to live in the moment, putting the camera down and simply enjoying where you are, not seeing the view from a camera lens. There is no denying Europe is home to sights that make you want to stay in the moment forever, and each city has its own unique stories to tell. Whether you are sitting in front of the mesmerising Eiffel Tower with a macaron in hand or getting lost in the fairytale town of Bruges, there is plenty to be seen from churches to modern skyscrapers. Europe takes you back in time, gives you a glimpse of the future and allows you to enjoy the present all at once.
The architecture is ancient, modern, and everything in between
Whether you are an architecture enthusiast or can simply appreciate a stunning facade, Western Europe has a wide range of impressive buildings. Step back in time while wandering around the Colosseum in Rome imagining the gladiators at combat, or marvel at the ornate Gothic structure of the monumental Duomo in Milan. While ticking off the iconic and grandest landmarks of a city is a must, make sure you spend time getting lost down the side streets too. Discover crumbling churches, Art Deco homes and unique structures that don’t have their own Instagram tag.
The people are great too
We’ve said it before, but in case you didn’t hear us, Europe is diverse. Very diverse. People are welcoming and always eager to share with you their traditions, unique foods and just those little quirks that make their country so special. Europeans are very hospitable and more than happy to show you their ways of life. We guarantee you will make friends along the way from locals to expats with lifelong memories in tow.
Oh darling, the Culture!
Europe has some of the finest museums, theatres and opera houses in the world. From beautiful classic art movements to “what even is that” modern art, it can definitely be found in Europe. The Vienna State Opera House, which opened back in 1869, is one of the leading opera houses in the world and just as beautiful inside as it is out. The Louvre has over 35,000 art pieces on display including the renowned Mona Lisa, and Milan is home to Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper which is arguably one of the most important artworks in history. In fact Italy as a whole has more masterpieces per square metre than any other country, that’s a lot of culture waiting for you!
The Schengen Visa
Yup, a visa made the list, but for good reason. The Schengen refers to the passport free zone that covers the European countries who have signed the Schengen agreement, and is the largest free travel area in the world. This applies to every country in western Europe. For international travellers, the most common type permits you to enter and travel these countries for an incredible 90 days, giving you plenty of time for your European adventure!
