Our last stop in Italy, today we travel to the ancient city of Rome. The capital of Italy, also known as the eternal city, is overflowing with history and is home to some of the most recognizable sites in the world. Founded in 753 BC, Rome’s history spans an impressive 28 centuries, with the Roman Empire being one of the most influential civilizations in the world.
One of the most well known sites of Italy, and the whole of Europe, is the iconic Colosseum. This 2,000 year old structure is the largest amphitheatre ever built and an excellent example of ancient Roman architecture. At its height, it could fit up to 80 000 people and was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. While the building has been partially damaged over time due to earthquakes, the structure still stands strong and is listed as one of the new 7 wonders of the world.
